Box Breathing

Imagine a box while doing this exercise to help focus your mind and regulate your nervous system.

About Box Breathing

Box breathing, also known as square breathing, is a powerful stress management technique often used by first responders, athletes, and military personnel to rapidly calm the nervous system. The technique involves four equal parts: inhaling, holding the breath in, exhaling, and holding the breath out—typically for four seconds each.

This symmetric pattern helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, shifting the body from a sympathetic "fight or flight" state to a parasympathetic "rest and digest" state. Regular practice of box breathing can lower cortisol levels, reduce blood pressure, and improve mental clarity and focus during high-stress situations.

How to Practice Box Breathing

  • Step 1: Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4.
  • Step 2: Hold your breath at the top of the inhale for a count of 4.
  • Step 3: Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 4.
  • Step 4: Hold your breath at the bottom of the exhale for a count of 4.

Repeat this cycle for 4 to 8 rounds, or continuously until you feel your heart rate settle and your mind clear. Use the visual guide and duration options above to assist your practice.
