Coherent Breathing

A continuous, flowing rhythm that maximizes Heart Rate Variability (HRV) for long-term stress resilience. 5.5s in, 5.5s out.

About Coherent Breathing (Resonance Frequency Breathing)

Coherent breathing, also known as resonance frequency breathing, is a powerful technique designed to maximize Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and balance the autonomic nervous system. The practice typically involves breathing at a rate of 5.5 to 6 breaths per minute, which is achieved by inhaling for 5.5 seconds and exhaling for 5.5 seconds.

At this specific continuous and flowing rhythm, your heart rate, blood pressure, and brainwaves synchronize (a state known as physiological coherence). This synchronization promotes deep relaxation, long-term stress resilience, and improved emotional regulation. It is highly recommended for reducing anxiety and building a resilient nervous system over time.

How to Practice Coherent Breathing

  • Step 1: Breathe in gently and continuously through your nose for roughly 5.5 seconds. Focus on filling your belly rather than your chest.
  • Step 2: Without pausing at the top, immediately and smoothly begin your exhale.
  • Step 3: Breathe out gently through your nose (or pursed lips) for roughly 5.5 seconds.
  • Step 4: Without pausing at the bottom, smoothly transition back into the inhale.

The key to coherent breathing is the absence of pauses (holds) and the continuous, circular flow of air. Practice for 5 to 10 minutes daily for maximum cardiovascular and nervous system benefits. Use the visual animation to guide your rhythm.
